Altruistic vs Commercial
Altruistic means the donor / surrogate cannot be paid (but may be able to be reimbursed for certain expenses). Commercial means the services can be paid for.

Commercial Surrogacy + Legalization Mechanism
A couple can access commercial surrogacy and have parentage legally assigned to them.

Donor
A donor is an individual who donates gametes (egg or sperm) to anyone trying to conceive. Donors are often used in the following situations: when a female’s eggs or male’s sperm is not viable, same-sex male or female couples, single fathers or mothers by choice.

Donor Anonymity
Donor anonymity means egg and sperm donors can remain anonymous.

Egg Freezing
Egg freezing is the process of extracting eggs from the ovaries and freezing them for later use. (Freezing eggs that can be fertilized with sperm at a later time.)

Embryo Freezing
Embryo freezing allows you to genetically test embryos now, but requires and commits you to a sperm source. (Fertilizing eggs with sperm at this time.)

Elective Gender Selection
Elective gender selection are used in situations where parents strongly desire a specific gender. Elective gender selection preferences are often based on the desire to balance the family, when one gender is represented in the family, e.g., a couple that already has three boys may desire a girl.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Process by which sperm is injected directly into a uterus during ovulation to decrease the sperm’s travel time to the egg.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Process by which eggs are fertilized by sperm in a lab and the embryo is implanted into the uterus. Full IVF process involves egg stimulation, retrieval of eggs from the uterus, fertilization in a lab then transfer into the uterus.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A)
Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A [formerly known as PGS]) may be performed in conjunction with IVF treatment and involves testing a small embryo biopsy for chromosomal abnormalities. Only euploid embryos (those with the correct number of chromosomes) are preserved and saved for future transfer. PGT-A testing greatly reduces the risk of miscarriage and increases the probability of a successful pregnancy.

Surrogate
Surrogacy refers to a gestational carrier. Individual can either use a donor egg and sperm or just sperm and their own eggs to be implanted into the uterus of the gestational carrier/surrogate. A gestational carrier/surrogate is used in the following situations: when a female’s uterus is not viable, same sex male couples, single fathers by choice.
